LET'S GET VERY REAL. A little over a month ago, I started to pursue a dream of mine. I've always been scared to branch out on my own as a full-time photographer and writer. I couldn't leave the security that a corporate job provided. Instead, I would photograph in my spare time and pick-up random gigs here and there. That all changed back in July when what was supposed to have been my dream job turned into my worst nightmare--a company that didn't want me.
For weeks afterwards, I felt paralyzed. Every fear imaginable crept into my head. "You're good for nothing," the fears would tell me, followed by "nobody wants your work" and other awful thoughts. I did my best to keep that negative energy at bay, but I was finding it tougher and tougher to keep going.
Then something clicked. "I'm already experiencing one of my worst fears," I told myself, "so what more do I have to lose?" Nothing. So I picked up my camera and started to shoot again. I began asking stylishly-dressed strangers on the street to let me make portraits of them. Then I started writing down details of our interactions, which spiraled quickly into what you're seeing and reading here today on North & Kedzie.
The truth is, I'm still very much at the bottom of the hill right now. But I've been setting goals, and I have a plan. I've committed to reach those goals, and I've picked up The Self Journal to help me get there (no, this is not a sponsored post, though I'd love for you to pick up a copy). I'm doing all of this because this is what I really love. From shooting to writing to editing to networking to social media, North & Kedzie is what I can do for twelve hours a day and still be excited to wake up the next day only to do it all over again.
So today, I have a fire under my ass. I'm working hard to make North & Kedzie the best that it can be for every one of you readers. I love Chicago, and I think we have some damn great style. I want to see us celebrate that style and learn together how we can all make it our own. I'd be honored if you'd continue with me on this journey of making style and culture approachable for everyone. And I can't wait to see what it looks like as we climb this mountain together.
PS: If you love the look in this photo, stay tuned. I'll be featuring it along with a killer jacket in a couple of weeks.
PPS: If you want to be my superhero, I'd love for you to help spread the word about North & Kedzie. You can share my Instagram posts (@briansgee), pin the images on this site, or share the posts on your social media outlets. Whatever the case, I'm just thrilled that you're one of my readers!
